Mother's Sorrow

Syvia Escalante sobs as she leaves her burned home after a fire claimed the life of her two daughters; Anna, 9, and 8-year-old Ruvi Escalante. Mike Bowman, a spokesman for the Fresno County Fire Department, said the sisters, were trapped in the house and had to be rescued by firefighters. The girls were taken to University Medical Center where the 8-year-old died a short time later. A person taking care of the girls was not injured, Bowman said. The fire was reported shortly after 3 a.m. in the 2900 block of South Ninth Street near Burns Avenue. Bowman said the house was totally involved in flames when the first units arrived and the children were trapped behind bars covering the windows.
